Soft Cell highlights the growth of physical form while emphasizing the synthetic character of the built environment through its use of man-made materials. It is a prototypical hand-made concept project using fiberglass rope, uv resin, and re-used plastic containers, and if desired, candles, light bulbs and electricity. The project revolves around Robert le Ricolais' "hollow rope" structural experiments, parametric design, opposition to technological driven design trends such as 3D printing, and the continual grey area between art and design.
From a more poetic stance, the project was a study in dematerialization. I wanted to create formal crescendos and decrescendos, beginnings and ends of form, from a perspective where something that is forming is also falling apart and/or melting, much like a flame disappears...
